Why Does My Computer Freeze up at Random times?

There are two major types of computer lock-ups, hard lock or a soft lock.

Hard lock - If you computer has experienced a hard lock, you will not be able to move pointer, nothing will respond, and 99% of the time you will have to press the power button to reboot.  Hard locks are usually caused by faulty hardware, could be a lose connection or a sign that something is failing or about to fail.  (while the computer is working now would be a good time to backup important data onto removable media)

Soft lock - Computer may seem unresponsive, however you can still move the pointer with the mouse. This type of lock is usually caused by a programming error or conflict.  Many times you can ctrl+alt+del and end whatever process is not responding.  Windows 98 and ME experience these type of lockups quite frequently, however many times you can only restart the computer.

BSOD - also known as the Blue Screen of Death, many times you will see some type of stop error, usually the error message can point a tech in the right direction to fix the computer, but more than likely something is going to have to be replaced or reformatted (erased).
